Helpful Hints & Things to Bring
Helpful Hints to Help Your Child Feel Comfortable in a New Child Care Setting
- Let your child know when you plan to return. Although young children aren't able to specifically understand time, knowing that you will be returning can be reassuring.
- At drop-off, take time to look around the classroom with your child. Point out some activities he/she likes, such as "There are blocks to play with and an art area." This reassures children that they have access to the entire room.
- Assist your child in using the bathroom (if applicable).
- Let your child know when you are leaving and go through your good-bye routine (e.g., a hug, a kiss, and a fist bump). Your child may cry, as is typical in a new setting. Be assured that PCC teachers will provide comfort and support throughout the day.
- Send a family photo for your child to talk about and look at throughout the day. Many children find this comforting.
Things to Bring to Child Care
Infants
- Bottles prepared to serve. Each bottle must be labeled with its contents (breast milk/formula), the child's full name, and the date. Extra bottles are recommended, if possible.
- A pacifier (if used)
- An extra set of clothing (pants, underwear, shirt, and socks).
- A crib-sized sheet and light blanket. Note: Blankets are not used in cribs.
Toddlers/Preschoolers
- A packed lunch, with food ready to be served (precut and assembled according to your child's needs). Note that the PCC is a nut-free facility. PCC teachers are unable to heat individual lunches. Please send all items, including a beverage (no soda), in a container marked with your child's name, for storage in the classroom refrigerator. Teachers will assist with opening containers and engage in table-time conversations during lunch.
- An extra set of clothing (pants, underwear, shirt, and socks).
- If your child is new to toilet use, consider packing a few pairs of underwear or a pull-up.
